N'entrez pas

In the past two days, I've heard interesting and disturbing news about Redwood City. Yesterday, it was reported that parents taking their kids to an elementary school in Redwood were being stopped outside the school grounds and questioned whether or not they are U.S. citizens. One parent even saw other parents being arrested for deportation because they did not have legal papers. Until now, schools and churches have been unofficially off-limits for ICE officers (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), but these sweeps for what they call "immigration criminals" have recently instilled greater fear and anxiety in certain communities because they have invaded what has always been "safe ground." Now that these places no longer sanctuary, parents have opted not to take their kids to school. School district officials have noted that attendance numbers at some locations have dropped considerably.

The questions: what happens to the kids at the end of the school day when their parents have been arrested and cannot pick them up at school? What happens the day after? Where will ICE officers venture next? Can anything remain sacrosanct?

Where do we go from here?
