Goats in the Year of the Pig

In addition to revealing how utterly brainless I am, these silly HATposts serve other purposes, too. They reveal a larger, more significant part of who I am as a Vietnamese American straddling multi-cultural existances on a daily basis. Many of my peers and many of the older generation do not remember what it is like to be Vietnamese. It's surprising that they even get together for family meals when Tet comes around. This is tragic. Tet is intrinsic in the culture of the Viet people. Anyone who comes home for one day and leaves the next -- in their "observance" of the new year -- has forgotten the traditional customs and symbolism of Tet. The celebrations used to be weeks on end. At leat 7 days of visiting one another's homes, well-wishing, feasting, celebrating, etc. It felt necessary to forget old debts and begin anew. It was important to await the new year -- a new beginning -- with generations of young and old sitting in the same house, which has been swept, dusted, mopped, washed, and painted, inside and out. Even now, I forget most of these customs. I forget that the first person to enter my home on the first day of the new year should be someone who will bring me luck. I don't bother putting up signs of newness and rejuvenation. I even forgot to look for those signs. And in this voluntary and intentional neglect, I lose a bit of myself year after year.

I'm often asked if I celebrate Chinese New Year. The answer is, yes, I celebrate the lunar new year. It is easy to forget that the lunar new year is an important part of the Vietnamese culture and many other cultures in S.E. Asia that have been culturally influenced by the Chinese. But, looking at me and how I live, does it even appear like I celebrate Tet? It's impossible to tell. The outward appearance have lost their -- distinctiveness. And distinction.

That said, I'm getting off my platform so that I can post the following from the website Lunar New Year Vietnam Style:

In Vietnam, the calendar was devised based on the regularly changing phases of the moon. Most Vietnamese, even city dwellers and overseas Vietnamese, have a lunar calendar in their homes to consult for festivals and auspicious dates. Because of the use of the lunar calendar, the actual days of the New Year vary from year to year.

The equinoxes and solstices that marked the beginning of the European seasons were taken as the midpoint by the Asian calendar with the result that each Vietnamese season begins six weeks earlier than its European counterpart.

Each year is "sponsored" sequentially by one of the twelve animals of the Vietnamese zodiac: the rat comes first, then the buffalo or ox, followed in order by the tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and lastly, the pig. Of these animals one is mythical (the dragon) and four (rat, tiger, snake and monkey) are wild, shunning contact with humans. Seven are domesticated. Every twelve years, the sponsorship reverts to the same animal. For example, the years 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 are dragon years.

In addition the Vietnamese use another set of names by repeating a cycle of 60. The 60-year cycle is made up of combinations of the twelve animals representing the earthly signs of the Vietnamese zodiac and ten heavenly or celestial signs usually called "stems". The Asian calendar forms a cycle of 60 years similar to the western century of one hundred years. The 60-year cycle begins when the first of the twelve zodiac signs is joined with the first of the ten celestial "stems". When each of the ten "stems" is matched with an animal, the result will be 60 different sets. The celestial "stem" attached to the zodiac animal provides modifying influences on the characteristics of the animal. For example, the year of the dog sign can be "modified" by each of ten different associated "stems".

Now, if some of you have seen my Blogger profile, you'll notice that it says I'm a sheep. Well, that is not so. As one of my dear friends from VN has pointed out, I am not a sheep but a goat, unless I've decided to add another animal to the Zodiac. Since I'm not very creative or influential enough to do that, I'll have to explain. I am in fact a goat: con De. In fact, calculated in the Vietnamese zodiac, I am the age of "Ky Mui." It is interesting to know about the Viet way of profiling and identifying ourselves. It is a way of knowing yourself and knowing your neighbors. (And your enemies.) Why? Because, as you've already heard me say, we are a communal people, or we'd like to believe that we are. We are descendants of mystical dragons. We have forged centuries of culture and despite being dispersed throughout the world, have made our mark on every continent. My mark is that of the goat. I am a part of all other Goats out there. (Find your zodiac animal.)

So, if you are a Ky Mui, this is what the website says about us:

Personality:An artist in your soul, you are gentle and peaceful, a fine aesthete who loves the touch of the noblest materials under his feet. Work bores you, and idleness you adore! Your ideal: to have someone take care of you. You dream of living under the protection of a prodigal patron who would let your creative talents bloom with no material constraints. You love working with your hands when it concerns art but hate anything to do with work associated with daily life around the house. You are looking for the right person to take care of you, make decisions for you, flatter you and take you to a silky, green field every day. The imaginary universe that you live in is very far from reality where "everything is but luxury, beauty, calm and voluptuousness...". When you come back to earth, you fall into a dark pessimism, are very stubborn, capricious and can pout. Your over sensitivity is only matched by your sluggishness. When conflicts arise you take cover until the storm has passed; you never even think of ramming your adversary with your horns. You usually win your fights because your perseverance and your natural charm are endearing. Your fault: You are an easy mark for wolves.

Work: You excel in creative, artistic fields and in anything to do with the theater or putting on a show. You have a purely conceptual mind that likes to be surrounded by realistic collaborators who will take care of the books and the commercial side of things because management isn't your field of predilection. You want neither power nor honors. You are at ease in the thick of things, far from the decision-makers. You work in a bubble with an excessive desire for perfection.

Money: You will gladly spend the money of others! You know how to surround yourself with benefactors who believe in your talent and know how to show it. You don't run after money and are capable of paying four times too much for an object without batting an eye. You have holes in your pocket and you are terrible at managing your money. Who cares! You live in a universe where good taste rules, either because you have money or are resourceful. You could transform any stable into a palace from the Arabian Nights!

Love: Anxious and dependent, you can't live without love. You need a companion that can protect you, is tender and will shower you with attention. Fights at home and raised voices make you extremely anxious. An ideal love, you are faithful and happy in an atmosphere of calm and security. To seduce you, your partner must be romantic and gallant, and invite you out to cultural events. Above all, they should never give you an ultimatum or look as though they want to leave you. In this case, you will be the first to leave the prairie!

You will be happy to know, my friends, that we Goats are compatible with Cats, Horses, and Pigs, and very incompatible with Buffalos. Please also note that we are "easy mark for wolves." Beware of wolves.

I am a goat also. I live in Pennsylvania USA. Here is a report I purchased for the got in the year of the fire pig!

Welcome to the Year of the Fire Pig! Abundance, generosity, and optimism reign, and the heart's desires are strong. Read on and discover how the year will play out for you!

Best Wishes,
The Astrocenter Team

Date of Birth: December 7, 1979 Chinese Sign: Goat

You Goats can be a stalwart of determination in accomplishing any task that is set before you. However, in the Year of the Pig, you'll receive more appreciation for being flexible and playful. Whether it's for work or fun, the Pig is likely to ask you to be their loyal sidekick and activity partner, if you aren't already.

Speaking of being a sidekick, accept all invitations to kick up your heels when the opportunity presents itself. Activities where your presence is requested could run the gamut from participating in shopping sprees and dining on the most delectable gourmet cuisine to running the rapids in a river raft. Just remember that the Pig likes to pamper those they like and receive pampering in return. This will come easier to you than before. Sharing experiences multiplies your joy.

At other times you'll be expected to give back for all that you're receiving. That's when you'll be working hard. The Pig may suddenly switch gears and asks you to work double time after several indulgences.

Now, many of you Goats may like solitude, and you may be more focused on work than play. Your bouts of melancholy can also get in the way of having fun. Believe it or not, indulging in a little more recreation in 2007 could actually help you prevent these mood swings. See how much better you feel when you make it a priority to be sociable and flexible and open to new adventure! You'll also feel great when you create something. Celebrity Goats who might give you inspiration include talk show host Barbara Walters, lead guitarist Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, or pop-icon artist Andy Warhol, who made a fortune painting soup cans on canvas.

In 2007, romance and family life also figure prominently in bringing you ongoing happiness. You single Goats could have a new twinkle in your eye when you meet the love of your life. Goats already in a stable relationship will continue to enjoy your time together. After all, if it weren't for your family and friends, you might feel misery is your steady companion! Rainy day despair is likely to disappear when you're with loved ones.

Both your personal happiness and your prosperity matter to the Pig. Set your sights on the tallest peak, and know there is much you can achieve as you're invited to climb the social ladder this year!

You Goats have an easy going nature that puts people at ease when they're in your presence. You can definitely charm anyone with your smiling eyes and disposition. If you're not already in a relationship, chances are it's because you chose solitude instead of settling for less than you want. The good news is that Cupid is smiling on you this year for a new relationship to begin.

Even before the Year of the Pig begins on February 18, expect to be blessed with good fortune. The period from February 12 to March 20 is especially good for your love life. March will be busy, so be creative in finding ways to juggle work tasks with romance. On March 25, practice random acts of kindness and know that they will come back to you with a special favor being granted later.

Under the June moon you could make a commitment as early as June 5. Those of you already in love might even go on a second honeymoon. In July, you'll have to focus on work, but you could get more time off toward the end of August for a peaceful getaway. October 3 through October 6, you're likely to have more time with loved ones. Love blooms for you this year.

In a twist on the Broadway hit musical, Annie Get Your Goat could be the story of your life this year. The plot involves a Goat who gains fame through agility and personality. Imagine being right on target in reaching your goals and heart's desire! Ready, aim, fire! What are your dreams? You'll certainly have the opportunity to have your newfound popularity parallel the heroine in the play.

Now, popularity may not be your top priority, but the end result will delight you by enhancing all of your relationships - family, romance, and business affiliates. Getting a raise or promotion could be a favorable outcome of socializing. This is not the year for you to lounge at home. The company you keep will affect every area of your life. So get out there and sweep everyone off their feet!

Some of you will be enjoying a new addition to your family in March or September. You feel on top of everything by balancing all of your priorities of family, friends, and work. It is wonderful to be wanted by so many people. In June and December, you get to stay home more. Until then, enjoy the fanfare.

Don't grumble if you occasionally fumble the ball. Just get up, brush yourself off, and run toward the finish line. As early as February 23, you could be in position to score a touchdown at work in the form of a raise or promotion.

Give up on people who don't cooperate, and this will help you to win recognition sooner. Although seeking praise and glory may not be your number-one priority, doesn't it feel good to be recognized for your artistic touch or athletic agility? Align yourself in the good graces of the higher-ups, and you could be moving up before the sun sets on August 30.

Expect a raise anytime between February and November. This will come in handy. If there is a new position or career move you've had your eye on, don't be namby-pamby when it comes to asking for it! All year long, you're likely to feel really in the groove! The Pig is all too happy to please you, too, especially when you're doing so much to accommodate them. When you're asked to fill in for the Pig in March and July, take the opportunity to shine. Your Goat aura is glowing this year!

As 50's hit song goes, "If you've got the money, honey, I've got the time." For some of you Goats, this will be a good motto to follow this year. The Pig wants to play and will be glad to promote you when you show that you're game. Give them every chance to be good to you! You could also pamper Pigs in return to increase the likelihood of rolling in the green stuff. If you're not rolling in dough, you could at least enjoy a nice steady flow through December 1. There are times you will have to work hard for it, but other times, bonuses received will be gravy.

Work on being more outgoing, and watch how this comes back to you in dollars and cents. It is no surprise that you Goats are well-liked. Like and trust earns you friends and commission through September 17. Then expect to work extra hard through October and November to mid-December. You'll have plenty of money to buy a new car or house or to go out on the town. This year, the Pig could help you find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

January 2007
Hope has kept you Goats afloat during the challenges and difficulties of the past. Every Dog has their day, but theirs is about to end on February 17. The good news is that you'll fare much better in 2007. The Pig will help you overcome many fears and have more fun. So finish up old projects by January 10 and move on. As a Goat, you're also likely to make new friends this month, so be more outgoing. Make a list of Goat goals before January 27 and know you'll be receiving a lot of help in reaching them!

February 2007
Goats take note, it is time for you to switch gears. With the beginning of the Year of the Fire Pig on February 18, you step forward into a favored position. This will be a welcomed change from the Year of the Dog, in which your preferences were disregarded. Put the past behind you. On February 14, expect to be in the pink with a pleasant surprise. Beginning as early as February 19, the Pig may even camp on your doorstep, imploring you to join them in playful celebrations. Don't compromise your responsibilities, but do play. In 2007, expect more than one wish to be granted, as if you rubbed Aladdin's lamp.

March 2007
You have much to look forward to in March. Whether you pitch a slow curve or a fast ball, your team is likely to come out winning in the baseball game of life. This month, step up to the plate and share your original ideas, because the boss is ready to listen and to put them into action. Work hard. March 21 is prime time for a raise or promotion. The ball is in your court all month long. So what if the competition is a bit jealous? Score a home run with the apple of your eye on March 24.

April 2007
You won't have any time to chew your cud. Balance family responsibilities with work. Move into the leading role on April 2, when the Pig wants time off. This is not the time to act humble – take charge. Show what you know and be ready to handle new responsibilities. Expect that you will have to put out a few fires on April 10. Keep a level head, and you'll continue to move forward. There could also be a new birth in your family around April 17, with some of you Goats becoming a proud parent or grandparent at this time of year.

May 2007
The Pig will want you to start the month with play. Get in touch with your inner child and be carefree. Jig! Jump! Jiggle! You could even giggle, with the Pig inspiring you to be sensationally silly. If you don't know how to be three years old again, this is a good time to learn! Enjoy the peachy treats the Pig brings you, and then it will be time to get back to serious work on May 9. Duty calls you to work hard the rest of the month. On May 26, you get a brief breather. Please the one who pleases you.

June 2007
Hark! Hear the meadowlark singing in the meadow. Join in by whistling a tune in June of your favorite love song. With so much love in your heart, it won't hurt to flirt with the one who has your eye but with whom you've been feeling rather shy. Extend an invitation and expect the unexpected to happen on June 11. Many doors will be opened to you this month in both love and work. Go outside your comfort zone and express what you are wanting out loud. Many of you Goats will even be drawn to making a commitment this month. Love beckons!

July 2007
On July 2, don't let it get your goat when you're left behind to hold down the fort while the Pig takes off for parts unknown. The Pig may not be able to include you in play this month. Make the most of your opportunity to be in charge. Think of it as your patriotic duty. The first week of the month, you could even be invited to be a keynote speaker. During the second week, plan on doing good deeds. Reserve July 21 and 22 for being with loved ones. When you're smiling, the world will be smiling with you. Make this your slogan. On July 27, expect good to come to you.

August 2007
This month, eat your spinach and Wheaties, because you'll need it to feel hardy enough to handle an extra heavy workload. On August 6, you could even be asked to take a stance before the board. Don't prance or dance or beat around the bush. Be straight forward in your approach to win everyone over to your way of thinking. You gain respect by speaking your personal truth. Then on August 28, take time out to be with friends and family. High up in the hills, you find respite. Meditate on what you value. Expect something special to happen on August 30.

September 2007
In days of old, monarchs and feudal lords built their forts high up in the hills to keep their eye on the kingdom below. This month, it will be to your advantage to also keep a lookout from a higher vantage point. Through September 21, beware of coworkers and higher-ups who'll want you to do their work and yours. You can only do so much. Reap financial rewards around September 28 for handling a fair share of work with finesse. On September 29, expect sparks to fly between you and your love interest. You could come out on top.

October 2007
The clover is gone from field, but this month is likely to yield fertile results anyway for you Goats. Go ahead and be clever and enterprising, and watch how your reward rises like bread being baked in the oven! This applies to love interests and also earning interest on the principal that sits in your bank account. Chances are, you'll love every minute and feel especially energetic through October 8. Just don't wear yourself out. On October 23, a special favor is likely to be granted. Accept it graciously. On October 31, expect some tomfoolery around you.

November 2007
Take some of that cash and put it in savings for a rainy day. On November 19, expect to fork over money for repairs that can't wait. Plan ahead for more unanticipated expenses the next couple of months. For some of you, this may be building a new house to have more room for a growing family. You work hard to support those you love. Be generous, but set a limit on spending. Take a well-deserved day of rest on November 25. November is also the perfect time to give thanks for all your blessings! Many people love you!

December 2007
Take care of yourself to stay healthy. Get a physical if you haven't had one in awhile. An ounce of prevention and having fun will keep you young! Look at Santa Claus, for example. History dictates that he was born over 1,800 years ago, and yet he still brings us merriment! Mrs. Claus has him on a low-cholesterol diet to keep his heart healthy. Count your blessings when it comes to your own health and give generously to support charities for people who aren't as lucky as you. Expect a surprise that puts a glow in your eyes before sunrise on December 31.

January 2008
Begin the year by celebrating everything you created in 2007. Then set new goals for yourself in 2008. The Year of the Fire Pig ends on February 6. So this month, be sure to finish projects you are working on. This is also a good month to look at how to increase your energy for the busy Year of the Rat ahead. Home cooking is better for your vitality than fast food. Have you taken your vitamins lately? On January 15, volunteer to help the less-fortunate. On January 21, don't think the worst of someone for their constructive criticism. Focus on self-improvement. On January 28, you can overcome a difficult hurdle.

February 2008
Join hands with everyone around you and thank those who worked with you. In the Year of the Fire Pig, your life was greatly enriched. In the Year of the Rat, you'll have nothing to fear, but it may be as full of blessings as the Year of the Pig has been. Foster a positive attitude for the Rat Year, which begins on February 7. It will be filled with new adventures!
